What is on it
Townsville City Council describes the Strand as a 2.2 km beachfront promenade built for enjoyment: bike paths and walkways, safe swimming beaches, picnic spots, playgrounds, exercise stations, a water park, a fishing pier, and restaurants and bars facing the water. The council's own phrase for the outlook across to Magnetic Island is "million-dollar views". We would not argue.
The Ville lists the Strand first among the things to do once you have checked in. The hotel lends bicycles free of charge, which is the easy way to cover the whole length and back.
Three places to know
The Rockpool
A stinger-resistant seawater pool at the northern end of the Strand, free to use, with picnic and barbecue facilities nearby. It slopes gently, with a shallow area the council describes as suitable for wheelchair access and children. Closed every Wednesday for cleaning, except public holidays.
The Water Park
Free, with slides and water cannons, and popular with families. Closed on Tuesdays for cleaning and maintenance, except in Queensland school holidays and on public holidays. The water is shut off five minutes before closing so it can drain safely before the lifeguards finish.
The pier
Fishing off the pier is one of the uses the council lists for the Strand.
Stinger season
Townsville's stinger season runs from November to May, when there is more marine stinger activity in the water. The council puts stinger nets out at the Strand and at several other beaches, including Picnic Bay and Horseshoe Bay on Magnetic Island, and lifeguards are on duty at the Strand from 9am every day.
The council is clear that the nets are not 100% effective. It advises wearing a stinger suit in the water, not sitting on or playing near the enclosures, and telling the lifeguards straight away if you are stung. If that sounds like too much for a holiday swim, the hotel pool is the simple alternative.
A little history
On the night of 10 January 1998 torrential rain flooded Townsville and Thuringowa, the worst floods in the cities' history according to the council. The Strand was badly damaged and locals came to call 10 to 11 January the "Night of Noah". The promenade was redeveloped and reopened on 23 October 1999, which is the Strand you walk today.
